About Us

Exceptionalities Academic Services was established in 2001, based in San Antonio, Texas. We offer educational services to meet the specific educational needs of students. Our goal is to develop and provide a customized, private, and comprehensive academic plan that meets state standardized objectives and address the needs and learning style of the individual student. We service students in the K-12 range in addition to students at the college level. Our exclusive, in-home service provides flexibility for busy and non-traditional schedules; hours of operation vary based on the needs of the student’s family.

Client confidentiality is a top priority. As such, special consideration is given to our clients’ privacy. Health concerns, family prominence, academic challenges, and simple desire for privacy are among the many circumstances that necessitate discretion.

All client information is confidential and may only be shared with licensed/certified and/or degreed professionals with written authorization. The comprehensive academic support provided includes individual tutoring, standardized test preparation, study skills development, ARD consulting, university searches, college applications/portfolio development, and homeschooling.

Our instructors are required to maintain documentation regarding each student’s performance (progress, concerns), and have working knowledge of each student’s background, routine (sleep patters, medication), and diagnosis as it relates to their ability to be academically successful. Instructors must be knowledgable of advances in academic and behavioral accommodations and modifications as well as changes in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).

Testimonials

My son struggled with learning since his early preschool years. These difficulties hindered his ability to succeed throughout his elementary school years. The staff with Exceptionalities Academic Services began working with my son about eight years ago when he was a freshman in high school. They helped him apply for and get accommodations for taking the SAT, with the college application process and most importantly with ongoing tutoring. As a result of their excellent work with him, he was able to graduate from high school, earn a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University, and obtain a master’s degree from Southern Methodist University. It is my sincere belief that my son would not be where he is today were it not for the academic support he received from the Exceptionalities Academic Services highly-skilled, dedicated, and professional staff.

We were lost within an educational system with a child with learning differences when we realized, parents need an educator advocate; a person who cares for the needs of our child as much as we do; one who is willing to do anything to help our child succeed. That advocate for us was found in Exceptionalities Academic Services.

By the age of six we knew our son was having trouble keeping up in the traditional classroom. By the age of seven we knew we needed help for him to progress. As we began to look at and try the options available to us – public school programs, doctors, counselors, specialized private schools, tutors, homeschooling – we came to realize that the middle children, those who ‘learn differently’ but who are not necessarily considered ‘special needs,’ advocate, a counselor with specialized knowledge about educational systems.

Then, after four long years of futile searching and failed attempts, Exceptionalities Academic Services was recommended to us. While we came to them with little to no hope for our son, they encouraged us by quickly assessing our son’s needs, formulating a plan of action, coordinating a bank of instructors and the instructional settings needed for him to succeed. They implemented their plan, and here we are today, two years later, with a son who loves learning, loves life, and is thriving as he contemplates what college and career he would like to pursue. Exceptionalities Academic Services is for us a God-given miracle. They truly are educational advocates; advocates for those of us who otherwise would be lost within an educational system that seems to have excluded the middle children – those like our son.

Learning Differences

In addition to being highly regarded, intelligent individuals who contributed to society, Alexander Graham Bell, Walt-Disney and Winston Churchill all had learning differences. Learning differences are not an indicator of a child’s intellect. Learning differences include but are not limited to dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. Learning differences often affect a person’s ability to perform while in traditional school settings. Learning differences affect the brain’s neurological functioning, making it difficult for an individual to receive, process and analyze information. The good news is that with the proper intervention and educational support, children with learning differences are often successful academically and lead productive lives. Educational strategies and assistance are essential in the treatment of learning differences. Children who are “gifted and talented” are characterized as having the capacity for high productivity intellectually, artistically and creatively. “Gifted and talented” children with learning differences are twice exceptional and benefit from supplemental academic support and assistance.
